Racecourse Road Altona Culvert and Ford Crossing Upgrade

Did you know just 5mm of rain used to flood this Hobsons Bay road?

That’s now a thing of the past, thanks to the Racecourse Road Altona Culvert and Ford Crossing Upgrade project led by SME Civil Construction, with engineering support provided by DEC Projects.

Due to the high public profile and environmentally challenging environment, the tendering team supported the scope negotiation and established a risk handling profile to ensure the contract is fair to both organisations.

To ensure the engineering gap is fulfilled, our engineer Matthew Wilson joined the team during delivery. His involvement helped ensure the project remained on schedule, met specifications and remained within project budget.

Project highlights include:

  • Road elevation increased by 1.5 metres

  • One million litres of stormwater treated and safely released into Kororoit Creek

  • 250m³ of 50MPa concrete and 19 tonnes of galvanised steel installed

  • 25 precast crown units lifted into place using a 250-tonne crane

  • An additional 130m³ of concrete and 20 tonnes of steel used for wing walls and the capping slab

The engineering role spanned key delivery stages, from excavation and environmental compliance to alignment of structural elements.
